BIG receives funding from several sources:
- private donations
- grants from private foundations, charities, and the European Commission
- contributions from BIG members
- fees from pharmaceutical / biotechnology industry partners for clearly defined management services that the BIG Headquarters and/or BIG members provide in connection with clinical trials
All BIG’s research activities, whether undertaken with commercial or academic partners, adhere to BIG’s principles of research conduct. These principles are designed to ensure that while trials will meet industry requirements from a regulatory standpoint, BIG and its members remain responsible for determining the research agenda, for controlling the clinical study data, and for presenting and publishing research findings (positive and negative) according to academic standards.
In this way, BIG preserves its scientific integrity while developing and conducting collaborative research with a variety of partners.

Breast cancer is potentially preventable and is one of the most curable life-threatening diseases when detected early.
Nowadays, advances in breast cancer research rely on the better understanding of cancer biology, which in turn, requires the use of powerful, sophisticated and expensive technologies. This is only possible through international research aimed at effective prevention and developing new treatments. Unfortunately, the potential of such research is limited due to insufficient funding.
Every person is unique, and so are breast tumours: advances with the human genome have led to our understanding that breast cancer is not just one disease but several, each requiring « tailored » treatments. To achieve this, today’s studies need to look at groups of patients whose tumours have the same genetic characteristics. But no single hospital or research group will see enough of these patients on its own to be able to obtain scientific results quickly. Only networks of academic research groups and hospitals have this capability, provided they have the financial means to collaborate beyond borders.
Enabling this collaboration is the mission of BIG, a challenging undertaking coordinated from the BIG Headquarters at the Jules Bordet Institute in Brussels.
International collaboration makes it possible to conduct studies that would not be possible for a single research group to carry out on its own, especially as treatments become increasingly targeted. Combining efforts makes it possible to quickly enrol large numbers of patients, or to share data and knowledge and efficiently answer important scientific questions. Faster results mean faster direct benefits to patients.
